As both a military veteran and a former pastor in a very large Protestant denomination here in the U.S., I believe it comes down to a simple principle: BLUF. Bottom. Line. Up. Front. If you have a doctrine that you intend to measure your congregants by, then call it what it really is.
At least have the integrity to transparently educate prospective members on what you are asking them to sign up for. If you're anti-LGBTQ, say it out loud. If you're anti-premarital sex, say it out loud. If you condemn the divorced (which is what cost me my ordination, by the way), say it out loud. But say it up front.
I want to know before I commit to a church that the moral meter is running, and I want to know what the rates are up front.
