Lord, I Don’t Know How to Do This

A poem about seeking the Spirit of God

Lord, can I be honest?
I have something to say
Someone asked me a question
I couldn’t answer today
He asked me how to know You
He was looking for The Way
I opened my mouth to answer
But I had nothing real to say

Lord, I don’t know how to do this
I don’t know how to feel
To look inside myself
And know that You are real

My path has never been easy
I’ve been tossed to and fro
Stumbled from one year to the next
Not knowing where to go
My spirit lacks the water
It needs to truly grow
I feel like piles of dust
Scattered where the wind blows

Lord, I don’t know how to do this
I don’t know how to feel
To look inside myself
And know that You are real

I need Your consuming fire
To rage inside my soul
Burn out my doubts and fears
And fill me head to toe
With Your grace and mercy
Your love will surely show
You have never forsaken me
And forever I will know

This is how I do this
This is how I feel
I see inside myself
I know that You are real
